Evening of Online Performances
Arvid van der Rijt, Tom Lönnqvist & Sara Kovamäki
22 January 2021, 17:00-19:00 (Finnish time)

In connection with the Material Light exhibition organized by FLASH and MUU, a performance evening will be held on Friday 22 January at 5 pm, during which the light-themed performances will spread to the exhibition space. The performance event will feature Arvid van der Rijt, Tom Lönnqvist and Sara Kovamäki, and will be streamed to viewers through Zoom.

In Arvid van der Rijt’s (1976) live video performance, The Ten Thousand Things, light and sound feed each other, moving between the recognizable and the abstract.

I am an audiovisual artist in the most literal way possible. My interest lies mainly in creating an experience, defining an event by giving it a certain place and time [removed]; I make use of sound and image to build up a certain atmosphere, to reach a symbiosis of the visible and invisible. My performances try to immerse the viewer and stimulate an active way of experiencing, I create a situation where you canʼt escape, but donʼt want to either.

In his work Photosynthesis, Tom Lönnqvist (1978) explores the connection of cells to light.

Photosynthesis is the feeling of being with the skin in a space where oxygen, light and light-inspiring works form an experiential environment. It dives into themes of oxygen production, oxygen availability, light, shade, and green meanings of vegetation.

Sara Kovamäki (1981) will perform a new performance interpreting the theme of the event, Exposed to light in feel, in dialogue with other works in the exhibition.

The performance moves in the turn, in the turn of light, on the border, on the border of light, influencing and resonating with the other artists´ works and their lights and brightnesses in the space. The performance is created by vibration, the constant movement of light in space. I think the performance settles into different lights and wavelengths, in the metaphorical, material, symbolic, banally essential, mundane, and mystical frequencies of light.

Not everything is able to be seen, although it is visible.

FLASHn ja MUUn yhteistyössä järjestämän Material Light –näyttelyn yhteydessä järjestetään performanssi-ilta perjantaina [removed] klo 17, jonka aikana valoteemaiset performanssit levittyvät näyttelytilaan. Performanssitapahtumassa esiintyvät Arvid van der Rijt, Tom Lönnqvist sekä Sara Kovamäki, ja tapahtuma streamataan katsojille Zoomin välityksellä.

Olen audiovisuaalinen taiteilija kirjaimellisimmalla mahdollisella tavalla. Kiinnostukseni on lähinnä luoda kokemus, määritellä tapahtuma antamalla sille tietty paikka ja aika. Käytän ääntä ja kuvaa rakentamaan tietyn ilmapiirin, saavuttaakseni näkyvän ja näkymättömän symbioosin. Esityksissäni pyrin upottamaan katsojan teokseen ja stimuloimaan aktiivista tapaa kokea. Luon tilanteen, josta et voi paeta, mutta et myöskään halua.

Tom Lönnqvist (1978) tutkii teoksessaan Photosynthesis solujen yhteyttä valoon.

Photosynthesis on ihon kanssa oloa tilassa jossa happi, valo ja valon inspiroivat teokset muodostavat kokemuksellisen ympäristön. Se sukeltaa kasvikunnan hapen tuottoon, hapen saatavuuteen, valon, varjon ja vihreän merkityksiin.

Sara Kovamäki (1981) toteuttaa uuden, tapahtuman teemaa tulkitsevan performanssin Tuntuvasti alttiiksi valolle dialogissa näyttelyn muiden teosten kanssa.

Esityksessä liikutaan taitteessa, valon taitteessa, rajalla, valon rajalla, tilassa olevien muiden taiteilijoiden teoksista ja niiden valoisuuksista ja valööreistä vaikuttuen ja resonoituen. Esitys syntyy värähtelystä, valon jatkuvasta liikkeestä tilassa. Ajattelen esitystä asettuvaksi eri valoihin ja aallonpituuksille, valon metaforisiin, aineellisiin, symbolisiin, banaalin välttämättömiin, arkisiin ja mystisiin taajuuksiin.
Kaikki ei ole näkyvää, vaikka onkin näkyvissä.
