Dear reader,
This peculiar 2020 corona summer continues to unfold in fits and starts for , as we continue to accommodate our ever-shifting COVID reality as individual staff members, as well as collectively as an institution. Despite the continued uncertainty in many areas, we are eager to share some exciting updates with you.

On 13 July, our newly appointed city curator Maryam K Hedayat has joined the team. Through her previous professional commitments, which brought her to a wide range of Brussels-based cultural institutions, from KVS to the Maison des Cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale in Molenbeek, Maryam has built extensive experience in working on issues of gender, sexual identity, migration, and (anti-)racism in various urban/artistic contexts. Additionally, she has produced several shortfilms, video installations, and short documentaries.
In her new position, Maryam will combine her creative approach to audiovisual arts with efforts of continued social inclusiveness for . Emphasising her full commitment to further embed the organisation within the inspiring, dynamic urban context of Brussels, she states: “Institutions are there for all people and need to build bridges to bring in new and diverse audiences. They need to realise the need to go outside their own structures, into the urban habitat in search of dialogue”. Welcome, Maryam!
Additionally, is honoured to welcome four new members to its board: Anouk De Clercq, Emma-Lee Amponsah, Katerina Gregos, and Tom Bonte. We’re looking forward to implementing their fresh and critical perspectives across our different institutional activities. Their new voices will serve to reinforce our board’s ongoing commitment to lead us through the current challenging times and keep at the center of conversations on audiovisual arts and society. At the end of June, we received a great number of inspiring applications for our 2020 OPEN CALL. The call is closed now, and we have started reviewing these submissions. To accommodate this task, we have brought together a jury that includes artists Lázara Rosell Albear and Sirah Foighel Brutmann, curator and critic Vincent van Velsen, and team members Andrea Cinel and Niels Van Tomme. We’re looking forward to discussing the proposals with the jury and to announcing the results by mid-September!

Lastly, we have prepared a special, month-long thematic edition of TV! On The Beach features works by Edith Dekyndt, Hans Op De Beeck, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Guillaume Bijl, and Katrien Vermeire. The presentation highlights artist film and text that considers the beach as a site for alternating poetic, playful, and historical encounter. Marked by a sense of domestic discovery awakened by the current corona reality, On The Beach merges salty nostalgia with unattainable horizons; the ebb and flow of beach life.
Enjoy the rest of the summer! You will be hearing from us again at the beginning of September with the opening of our Tony Cokes exhibition and much more.
Take care,
Niels Van Tomme /
