Fwd: Collective Gardens exhibition

!This friday/ Ce vendredi/ Deze vrijdag: opening in KOMPLOT

Dear all,

We are pleased to invite you to Collective Gardens, an exhibition curated by Tebeac-students (KASK, Ghent) that will
take place from 20 – 28/6 at Komplot (Brussels) and at the Graduation week
25 – 29/6 at KASK. Find our publication in Komplot and in the
bookstore at Kask.

The Collective Gardens project started in October 2013. Or wait, it started way before that. It
existed probably already before you were even born. We, the students of the curatorial program
(TEBEAC) at KASK, appropriated and transformed this Collective Gardens idea as a curatorial
concept. Collective Gardens serve in this way as a steppingstone for Hito Steyerl’s volatile
reflection on occupation. This helps us to define our curatorial position: as a stranglehold, a
creative impulse, a liberation of the concept itself, a provocation in need for a counter-action, an
unanswerable question, an incentive for re- articulation, say what?!!! How could these Collective
Gardens take form? And how do they relate to each other? Imagine a constellation of possible
spaces, entangled processes, flourishing relationships, moving subjects and objects, circulating
ideas, intersecting time,… The exhibition models take on different forms and expressions, born
out of the archetypical Collective Gardens idea. The three possibilities manifest themselves in
KOMPLOT (Standing in the middle of the garden, turning 360 °), KASK (Drowning in the garden,
looking for a thrill) and the publication (Untitled: Gardening in Progress) stretched out over a
period of nine days. The first garden asks for a traditional environment and needs to be
maintained regularly, the second grows wild and exists only for a certain amount of time. Both of
them are part of the third garden, which presents our collective of gardens as described and
defined in botanical & gardening books. Putting the idea of Collective Gardens in an academic
and educational context or a ‘white cube environment’ is as jolly and curious as planting a
coconut tree in a winter garden. Imagine how it could grow!

Participating artists: Margherita Raso, Celine Drouin Laroche, Mo Franken, Astrid Bossuyt, KubistaBolve, Wera Imie Nazwisko, Amine El Gotaibi, Sven Dehens, Thomas GrØdal, Freddy K, Augustas Serapinas
