What: Ellentriek #17: Hack your knitting machine with Knitic! (Workshop)
Where: Pianofabriek Exhibition space, Rue du Fortstraat 35, 1060 Brussels
When: Saturday 18 May 10:00-18:00

In the eighties and nineties electronic knitting machines were readily
available. But it was never a simple task to knit an image, a drawing,
photograph, text you designed yourself with it. You could buy premade
images on floppies of punch cards. This is all about to change! With
Knitic you can connect your computer directly to the knitting machine.

Do you have a Brother KH930 or KH940? Do you finally want to do what you
want with it? Are you fascinated by open hardware/free software and are
you curious to experience this specific way of working and thinking? Or do
you, as a hardcore knitter want to see what’s possible when the
technological electronics part of the knitting machine has been changed?
Or are you just curious to come and test the old knitting machine with a
new brain? Then this workshop is for you !

On the program :
– 10-13h We disconnect the old brain of your machine, assemble a few
electronic components and hook up your computer to the machine to show you
how to work with teh hard-and software Knitic. This part of the workshop
is also for beginners and people who know nothing about electronics.

– 14-18h Come and test the new old machines and knit a photograph, text,

What: Mz Balthazar’s Laboratory in Brussels (Workshop)
Where: Pianofabriek Exhibition space, Rue du Fortstraat 35, 1060 Brussels
When: From 30 May 14:00 to 1 June 18:00

Mz. Baltazar’s Laboratory is a feminist hackerspace and an artist
collective based in Vienna. They work with open source technology and
philosophy, in a women only space, operating a non-‐hierachic teaching
and informal learning context. The lab offers women space to appropriate
electronics and realize interactive art projects. In a three days workshop
they will hack hardware, make noise, build angst-‐robots and program open
source software. A lot of “stupid” tech questions will be asked as well as
art projects will be developed together. No one is an expert, no one is
only student, equipment and knowledge are shared in order to articulate
yourselves through high tech in novel ways.

This workshop aims to introduce the basics of electronics, focusing on
what is essential for exploiting the open source Arduino platform, and
therefore, to build things using different kinds of in and out-puts. We
propose a relaxed approach in which questioning is part of the process,
and we aim to provide a pleasant environment for exploring, playing with
the tools and above all having fun!

In short : playing with electronic components and building [removed]
Soldering & wiring up. Working with Arduino & understanding code [removed]
Playing with [removed] Building an interactive device/ art piece.

The workshop is only for persons who call themselves women or trans. If
you love to make things, rather than consuming them, join us!

With: Mz Baltazar’s Laboratory, with Lale Rodgarkia-Dara (AT) & Patricia
Reis (PT)

This workshop is part of the Ruelles project and is supported by Constant
as a Samedies event.
