Het festivalthema en de titel van de 11de Artefact-editie is The Social Contract. Die term wordt sinds de 17de eeuw veelvuldig gebruikt in politieke theorie en filosofie maar duikt vandaag nog steeds vaak op in interviews met politici, partijprogramma’s, debatten, opiniepagina’s, … Reeds bij de vroege en belangrijke sociaal contractdenkers John Locke, Thomas Hobbes en Jean-Jacques Rousseau wordt het concept verschillend uitgewerkt en geïnterpreteerd. De klassieke invulling betreft de verhouding tussen het individu als burger en een politieke entiteit, waarbij het individu een deel van zijn vrijheid en macht opoffert zodat de staat aan de burger bijvoorbeeld veiligheid en bestaanszekerheid kan bieden. Maar wat betekent het sociale contract nog in de huidige (crisis)tijd in een geglobaliseerde wereld?

Een centrale vraag binnen het festival is of we die ‘contracten’ kunnen heronderhandelen of hervormen. Kunnen we ze opzeggen of herschrijven? Het programma probeert een ruimte te bieden aan vormen van weerstand en verbeelding. Door middel van tentoonstellingen, voorstellingen, debatten en ontmoetingen met internationale kunstenaars gaan we op zoek naar de positie van en alternatieven voor The Social Contract in onze hedendaagse informatie- en netwerksamenleving.

The title and theme of this eleventh edition of Artefact is The Social Contract. This term has been used in political and philosophical theories since the 17th century, but still emerges regularly today, in interviews with politicians, political party programs, debates, … Even the early adopters of the social contract theory, such as John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, used and interpreted the concept in different ways. The classical interpretation concerns the relation between the individual as a citizen and a political entity, in which the individual sacrifices part of his freedom and power in order for the state to offer for instance safety and social and economic security. But what is the position of the social contract in our current times of crisis in a globalized world?

One of the festival’s main questions is whether we can renegotiate or reform those ‘contracts’. Can we cancel them, rewrite them? The programme focuses on different forms of resistance and imagination. With exhibitions, performances, debates and meetings with international artists, we look for the position and alternatives for The Social Contract in our contemporary information and network society.
