Opening programme!

These exhibitions are part of Fringe, a co-creative arts festival taking place this year as part of KU Leuven’s 600th anniversary.

Under the motto ‘Get lost!‘, Fringe invites you to wander. You can discover new and unknown artists at various locations throughout the city. They show how they arrive at new ideas or insights by searching, wandering, and sometimes returning. For three weeks, thirteen art organisations from Leuven will present a captivating program featuring visual arts, circus, punk, sound installations, and much more.

Drifting Waters – Qiao Chu Guo, Asma Laajimi, Carole Louis and Niel de Vries

At the invitation of FRINGE, Off the Grid & Cas-co bring together four artists who are exhibiting in Leuven for the first time. Drifting Waters is a visual, narrative, and sometimes fictional journey through the physical and digital world. From crossing seas and oceans to rivers and streams, the exhibition bridges dating apps, the flow of communication with family members, and the feeling of connection far from home.

Drifting is both a metaphor and a lived experience.

This exhibition explores the duality between the disorienting feeling of finding paths, migrating, and planting roots. The stories you encounter are embodied streams of water and data: how stories and knowledge flow between minds, how intimacy is mediated across vast geographies, and how rivers are monitored and alienated from those who once lived along their banks.

Solo exhibition Che Go Eun

In collaboration with BAC ART LAB, Werktank, and Cas-co, Che Go Eun is currently in residence at BAC ART LAB, where she is developing a new series of works that will be part of her solo exhibition, titled C. “[removed]#8221; That’s what Che Go Eun‘s father called her when she returned to South Korea. In his eyes, she was a lazy artist who didn’t fit his traditional image of a woman. From that conflict, C. was born: an installation in which Che Go visually translates her father’s words and their impact using AI.

Che Go Eun fed conversations with her father and fragments from her diaries to Stable Diffusion. The AI tool was trained by Eun herself to create Dancheong motifs – traditional Korean patterns – because, like many AI tools, Stable Diffusion lacks information about non-Western art.

Based on the AI-generated images, Eun painted watercolours, which she then re-entered into an ongoing conversation between human and machine. She printed the patterns that emerged from this onto wallpaper, with which she decorated the BAC ART LAB Hangar.
