We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mimmo Jodice on October 27, at the age of 91.

Born in Naples in 1934, he witnessed the major cultural and social changes of the 20th century. Fittingly, as a pioneer of Italian photography and one of the leading figures of the avant-garde, his work’s exploration of its conceptual and poetic dimensions affirmed the transformation of the place of his medium not just as one of mere documentation, but as a part of the artistic canon.

His striking and immediately recognisable work including the series La città invisibile, images of stark cityscapes devoid of human life, the series Anamnese, portraits capturing the haunting facial expressions of ancient statues, and the series Mediterraneo, blurred meditations on antiquity and origin in [removed];

His influence shaped generations and his works continue to be exhibited in major institutions and collections worldwide.

As we honour his passing, we celebrate his vision: the ability to see beyond the surface, to find silence in light, and to remind us that to look is to remember.
