NW summer programme

Breedbeeld Blueprints photography exhibition, Congolese Independence Day and some special films: before we enter the summer break, we will host a number of partner projects in Lokaal Dendy. Until then, you can of course visit the ongoing exhibitions, both of which are all about bringing people together. At the end of August, Manus Magazine will pay tribute to its image makers with the exhibition Risonanties. But more on that later. Hope to see you soon at NW!

Alfred Hitchcock, Vertigo, 1958

Vertigo (1958)

Alfred Hitchcock

A one-off chance to watch this 1958 classic on the big screen. Initially given a mixed reception upon its release, Vertigo grew into an influential masterpiece that today ranks as one of the most important films of the 20th century.

Young NW also presents a film this month: on Friday [removed], you can see Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu. And on Sunday [removed], there is an extra screening of Soundtrack to a Coup d' Etat with post-screening discussion by Patrick N'Siala on what this 1960 history does to us here and now.

Lokaal Solidair

Day of the Congolese Independence

Lokaal Solidair, part of Lokaal Dendy, is a space for gathering, learning, and reimagining solidarity as an everyday practice. We are happy to open our doors to Afrik'Aalst to celebrate the Congolese Independence Day. This celebration takes place at Fernando Marques Penteado's exhibition Tender, Trivial, Totemic Table Talks about hospitality, social rituals and the question of who gets a seat at the table – past and present. There will also be film, time for reflection and conversation, music, fashion, art, a craft market and festive food.

Table Talks

Fernando Marques Penteado

Fernando Penteado Marques pays attention to the often overlooked aesthetics of everyday life. In Tender, Trivial, Totemic Table Talks, the artist collects tables from Aalst thrift shops and dresses them up with textiles and found objects. Totem-like sculptures, are decorated with snacks prepared by local communities. With carefully composed constellations of objects and embroidered artworks, Penteado invites us to reflect on the mechanisms that determine who is welcome, who is excluded, and what deserves our attention.

Info~Angel:

Atelier Kern Rechteroever

This edition of the Info~Angel archive presentations looks back at the urban renewal plan Common Ground (2013), which aimed to develop the Right Bank (Rechteroever) as a shared space. More than a decade later, the largely unimplemented plan by Architecture Workroom Brussels, 51N4E and Technum continues to inspire. This Info~Angel reflects on the possibilities for the future of our neighbourhood. What could breathe new life into this proposal?

Summer Break

from 14 Juli until 14 August

The summer break is a time for our team to recharge, and to work behind the scenes on next year's programme. From 14 August, we will welcome you back with open arms, and get everything ready for a new school year, a new film season and the autumn exhibitions by none other than Pauline Curnier Jardin, Lisa Vlaemminck and an Info-Angel with tantalising archival material about Arend Carnival. We are already looking forward to it. In the meantime, we wish you a recharging summer too!
